“Israeli” forces tighten restrictions on occupied West Bank
(MENAFN) Residents of the Palestinian village of Al-Mughayyir in the occupied West Bank have been unable to freely enter or leave their community after Israeli forces shut its only functioning entrance for 20 consecutive hours, according to a local official.
Amin Abu Aliya, who heads the Al-Mughayyir village council, said restrictions and attacks targeting Palestinians and farmers have become increasingly severe over the past 20 days.
He explained that the village entrance is frequently blocked at different times of the day. In the morning, the closure prevents residents who work outside the village from reaching their jobs, while later closures stop people who have left from returning home.
According to Abu Aliya, the restrictions are creating increasingly difficult conditions for residents, with the apparent aim of forcing workers to remain outside the village and eventually encouraging Palestinians to leave the area.
On Friday, Israeli military and police forces, accompanied by Israeli occupiers, entered Al-Mughayyir in large numbers, reportedly claiming that a sheep belonging to an occupier had been stolen.
Abu Aliya dismissed the allegation as untrue, saying the forces nevertheless targeted Palestinian livestock owners, entered a house and attempted to take sheep. The incident led to confrontations in which several Palestinians were injured.
The village entrance has remained closed since the raid, Abu Aliya said, adding that ambulances and Civil Defense vehicles have also been prevented from reaching the village during the closures.
While residents were confronting attacks in the southern part of Al-Mughayyir on Friday, more than 50 Israeli occupiers reportedly entered the northern section. They assaulted a Palestinian farmer and took 25 sheep, according to the village council head.
Earlier Saturday, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry described the situation in Al-Mughayyir as a “suffocating siege” that had continued for approximately 20 days.
The ministry said Israeli forces have tightened control over the village's entrances through a system of gates, with residents sometimes being given only two hours per day to travel in or out.
It warned that the combination of movement restrictions and attacks by Israeli occupiers was aimed at cutting the village off from its surroundings and establishing conditions that could lead to the forced displacement of its Palestinian population.
Three Palestinians were wounded in an attack by Israeli occupiers in Al-Mughayyir on Friday. An ambulance attempting to reach the injured was reportedly stopped by Israeli forces and occupiers.
