Poland Advances Talks with US to Move Patriot Production
(MENAFN) Poland and the United States are moving closer to an agreement that would transfer part of the production of Patriot air-defense systems to Poland, according to Polish Deputy Defense Minister Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka.
Sobkowiak-Czarnecka says negotiations have progressed beyond government-level discussions and are now being conducted directly with companies involved in the defense industry. She adds that a decision could be reached within the next few weeks.
“We have gone beyond the stage of political declarations,” she said.
The negotiations focus on establishing part of the Patriot production chain in Poland as demand for the US-made air-defense system increases significantly across Europe.
Warsaw first formally puts forward a proposal for joint production of Patriot missiles with the United States and Ukraine during meetings in Washington in July. Sobkowiak-Czarnecka says the proposal is subsequently discussed with representatives from both the Pentagon and the State Department.
Earlier this month, the deputy defense minister says the discussions have already moved well beyond an initial exploratory phase and suggests that Washington could make a decision within “a month or two.”
