Algeria Contains 118 of 123 Wildfires, 5 Still Burn
(MENAFN) The pace of Algeria's forest fires slowed Saturday as firefighting crews pressed on across several provinces and large solidarity convoys made their way toward the hardest-hit areas, chief among them the eastern province of Jijel.
In a statement, the Civil Protection Authority said 123 fires had broken out between Aug. 28 and 29 as of 7 a.m. local time (0600GMT). Of those, 118 had already been brought under control, leaving five still burning — two in Jijel, two in Setif and one in Tebessa.
In Jijel, crews kept working to douse a blaze in the Mechta El-Maissa area of Texenna municipality. Several families were moved out of their homes as a precautionary measure before the fire was contained enough to let residents return, even as firefighting efforts continued in the area. The authority sent in two AT-802 aircraft to reinforce ground crews battling the flames in Jijel.
Local media said the agency has deployed some 19,000 personnel to fight fires across the country's eastern provinces.
Grief has accompanied the firefighting effort: funerals for wildfire victims began Friday in Jijel, where a collective burial took place at Dar al-Baqaa cemetery in Beni Habibi municipality. Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and several cabinet ministers attended the service. Separately, the provincial civil protection authority said a search was launched Friday for people still missing in Djemaa Beni Habibi municipality.
Even as search-and-rescue and firefighting operations continued, Algerians mobilized large convoys of solidarity aid bound for fire-ravaged regions, especially Jijel, according to a correspondent. The convoys set out from multiple provinces loaded with food, bedding and other essential supplies for displaced and affected residents.
Meanwhile, officials in Jijel have begun surveying the material damage left by the fires, laying the groundwork for compensation to affected residents.
