China, Nepal Vow Deeper Crisis Cooperation as Flood Deaths Top 633
(MENAFN) The foreign ministers of China and Nepal pledged Saturday to deepen emergency response and relief cooperation as catastrophic cross-border flash floods left at least 633 people dead and thousands more unaccounted for.
Nepalese Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal said on X that he spoke by phone with Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, during which both officials voiced "profound grief" over the lives lost and destruction wrought by the floods hitting both nations.
The two diplomats recommitted to strengthening emergency response and relief operations, as well as real-time sharing of hydrological data, Khanal said in a statement. He also expressed Nepal's gratitude for China's assistance in the ongoing rescue and relief effort.
At Nepal's request, China's Ministry of Emergency Management rushed five tunnel experts to the country, according to the People's Daily, with the specialists joining rescue operations at a hydropower station tunnel. A further four Chinese tunnel experts were dispatched shortly after to meet additional needs on the ground, the report said, aimed at fully supporting tunnel rescue work.
India is also mobilizing aid. Six Indian forensic expert teams were expected to arrive in Kathmandu on Saturday to assist with DNA analysis for identifying the dead, according to the Indian government. A specialized Indian tunnel rescue team, along with equipment, was also due to reach Nepal Saturday, India's Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
As of Saturday evening, 287 Indian nationals remained unaccounted for, while 88 had been rescued, the ministry said.
The floods have ravaged areas along the Nepal-China border, setting off massive search-and-rescue operations for nearly 3,000 missing people, including foreign tourists. Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier offered condolences and said Beijing stood ready to assist Nepal's rescue efforts.
Search operations remain underway.
