Algeria Brings Most Wildfires Under Control as Firefighting Efforts Continue
(MENAFN) Wildfire activity in Algeria eases on Saturday as emergency crews continue battling several remaining blazes across the country, while large solidarity convoys head toward affected communities, particularly in the eastern province of Jijel.
The Civil Protection Authority says 123 fires are recorded between Aug. 28 and Aug. 29 as of 7 a.m. local time (0600GMT). Of those incidents, 118 are brought under control, while five fires remain active.
The remaining blazes are reported in three provinces, with two in Jijel, two in Setif and one in Tebessa.
In Jijel, firefighting teams continue working to contain a forest fire in the Mechta El-Maissa area of the Texenna municipality. Several families are temporarily evacuated from their homes as a precaution, but they are later allowed to return after the flames are brought under control.
Firefighting operations continue in the area, with two AT-802 aircraft deployed to assist ground crews and strengthen efforts to contain the blaze.
Local reports say around 19,000 personnel are mobilized to fight wildfires across Algeria’s eastern provinces as authorities work to prevent the remaining fires from spreading.
