Iran Says Forces Crush US-Israel-Linked Cell Near Pakistan Border
(MENAFN) Iranian security forces broke up an alleged US- and Israeli-backed militant cell in the country's southeast on Saturday, leaving one person dead and six others in custody, according to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The IRGC Ground Force's Quds Headquarters, which oversees operations in Iran's southeastern region, said the cell was intercepted soon after crossing into the Saravan district of Sistan and Baluchestan province, a border area adjacent to Pakistan.
Officials described the raid as a coordinated effort involving three agencies: the provincial Intelligence Department, the IRGC Intelligence Organization, and Iran's national police.
According to the IRGC's account, one suspect was killed in the operation, while six others—described as members and supporters of the group—were taken into custody.
Authorities said the raid yielded a substantial weapons cache: 20 packages of explosives along with associated equipment, a stockpile of light and semi-heavy arms, ammunition, and Starlink satellite communications gear.
The IRGC alleged the network had been preparing strikes against select targets in the southern reaches of Sistan and Baluchestan province. It went further, asserting the group's operations were tied to the United States and Israel and formed part of a broader American military campaign against Iran.
That campaign, according to the report, erupted on Feb. 28, when strikes hit military installations, nuclear facilities and infrastructure across Iranian territory. Iran answered with missile and drone attacks on Israeli soil and on US military positions in the region.
A June memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran sought to halt the fighting, but the truce has since frayed, with both sides clashing over how its terms should be carried out.
