Germany Plans Russia Attribution Over Leipzig Airport Drone Attack
(MENAFN) Germany is preparing to officially attribute an attempted explosive drone attack at Leipzig Airport to Russia and introduce tougher measures against Moscow, according to reports.
The planned response is expected to target Russian entities directly and be coordinated with a new package of European Union sanctions currently being prepared in Brussels.
German authorities could announce the measures in the coming days, potentially around an EU foreign ministers’ meeting scheduled to take place in Ireland on Tuesday.
It remains uncertain whether Berlin will blame individual Russian operatives for the attempted attack or directly hold the Russian government responsible. A German government spokesperson declines to comment on the possible attribution, saying any official decision will be based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
The potential measures are reportedly expected to extend beyond previously discussed actions, including the expulsion of Russian diplomats or the closure of the Russian House cultural center in Berlin.
Officials do not disclose the exact steps under consideration but indicate that the response could involve stronger sanctions against Russia or an expansion of military assistance provided to Ukraine.
