Berlin Hit With USD2.3M Ransom Over Stolen Data
(MENAFN) Hackers who infiltrated Berlin's government IT network have issued a ransom demand, threatening to release nearly 6 terabytes of stolen data unless they're paid, German media reported Saturday.
The weekly magazine Der Spiegel reported that the ransomware group Rhysida claimed responsibility in a post on the dark web, demanding 30 bitcoin — roughly 2 million euros, or $2.3 million. The group said it would publish the stolen files if the ransom went unpaid, giving Berlin a one-week deadline.
Berlin's city-state government convened an emergency meeting Friday to address the breach, a public broadcaster reported. "The State of Berlin has fallen victim to a serious crime," Governing Mayor Kai Wegner said afterward. "Berlin will not allow itself to be blackmailed," he added.
Media reports indicate the hackers claim to have obtained a vast trove of sensitive material, including records from nearly 80,000 administrative fine proceedings, more than 46,500 contracts, data on critical infrastructure sites, judicial files, emergency response plans, passwords, and close to 6,000 files containing login credentials.
Investigators have since determined the intrusion began earlier than first thought, with data exfiltration underway "at least since Aug. 7." The breach itself was first detected on Aug. 14, prompting officials to temporarily disconnect several ministries from the network in mid-August as a containment measure.
The compromised system, known as BeLa, is a high-speed fiber-optic network connecting hundreds of offices across Berlin's city-state administration. It is operated by the state IT provider ITDZ Berlin.
