Nigerian President Seeks to Keep US Drug Probe Records Sealed
(MENAFN) Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu asks a US federal court to prevent the disclosure of records connected to past investigations involving him, according to court filings and his legal representatives.
Tinubu’s attorneys, Christopher W. Carmichael, Victor P. Henderson and Oluwole O. Afolabi, argue that the requested documents should either remain redacted or continue to be withheld from public release.
The president’s legal team submits a 16-page filing to the US District Court for the District of Columbia, opposing a request from transparency activist Aaron Greenspan to obtain records held by the US Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
Greenspan launches a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit in 2023 against several US government agencies, seeking access to documents connected to historical investigations involving Tinubu.
The requested material includes the FBI’s complete file on the Nigerian president, as well as FBI Form 302 interview records covering the period from 1992 to 1993.
The legal dispute also involves documents associated with a 1993 US civil forfeiture case concerning approximately $460,000 linked to Tinubu.
