Niger Quells Military Unrest Near Niamey Airport
(MENAFN) Niger's defense minister announced Saturday that military unrest in the capital, Niamey, had been contained, with security forces reasserting control over key sites that came under attack.
Gen. Salifou Mody delivered the update in remarks aired on national television, following reports of heavy gunfire and explosions near Diori Hamani International Airport and the Presidential Palace.
According to Mody, a faction of soldiers had "broken away from military order" and attempted to detain fellow troops at the Base 101 military facility in Niamey before turning their weapons on multiple sensitive locations across the capital.
He credited a rapid response from Nigerien defense and security forces for bringing the situation under control, saying authority over the affected areas was being restored in stages. Mody called on Niamey residents to stay calm and carry on with their normal routines.

Sustained gunfire and blasts rang out through the night and into the morning near Diori Hamani International Airport and the nearby Presidential Palace. The unrest also struck the Base 101 military installation at the airport before security forces moved in, retook the area, and launched a follow-up operation.
This marks the third assault on Diori Hamani International Airport this year: the airport and adjacent military base were struck in January, and the airport and Base 101 came under fire again in June.
