Greece Puts Crete, Rhodes on Highest Wildfire Alert
(MENAFN) Greek civil protection officials issued an extreme wildfire warning Saturday for Crete, Rhodes and Karpathos, placing the islands under the nation's most severe fire-risk classification as powerful winds swept the region.
Officials attributed the danger to strong northerly winds forecast to hit gusts of 8 to 9 on the Beaufort scale.
A second tier of alert, Category 4 or "very high risk," was declared for Attica, southern Evia, southern Laconia, the Cyclades and islands across the eastern Aegean.
Authorities directed emergency agencies, municipal governments and regional administrations in the worst-affected zones to boost preparedness immediately.
Parched conditions paired with intense winds are expected to hamper any firefighting response, officials warned.
