Zelenskyy Says US Briefed Ukraine on Secret Moscow Meetings
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Friday that the United States has shared information with Kyiv about a recent round of meetings held in the Russian capital, Moscow.
Speaking during an evening video address late Friday, Zelenskyy said the intelligence Ukraine received pertained to meetings that took place in Moscow "the other day," describing them as a "series" of engagements. He noted that Ukraine was in contact with Washington both before and after the meetings occurred.
"Thank you for the information – and for the necessary tone of the conversation with Russia. We value the alignment of steps and the fact that America is advancing a realistic vision of what needs to be done and what must be achieved," Zelenskyy said.
"Russia must end its war, and all the necessary conditions must be created to make that happen," he added, stopping short of identifying who took part in the Moscow talks.
The disclosure follows confirmation from the Kremlin on Wednesday that CIA Director John Ratcliffe traveled to Moscow on Tuesday — the first visit by a sitting CIA chief since 2021. The Kremlin said the trip involved contacts between security services, calling such engagement a "positive phenomenon, a positive process."
Word of the visit surfaced after a US Air Force C-17A Globemaster III flew from the Latvian capital, Riga, to Moscow's Vnukovo Airport on Tuesday morning, according to flight-tracking service Flightradar24. The aircraft had landed two days earlier at Camp Springs in the US, near Joint Base Andrews in Maryland — a location frequently used by White House aircraft. Flightradar24 data showed the plane departed Moscow and returned to Riga later that same evening.
Later Wednesday, US President Donald Trump described Ratcliffe's Moscow trip as "semi-routine."
The following day, pressed in the Oval Office on whether Russian President Vladimir Putin had committed to not attacking NATO territory, Trump said: "I had good talks with him. He's not going to be attacking a NATO territory."
Asked whether he wished to issue a direct warning to Russia against striking NATO territory, Trump responded: "I don't want to comment on that, but they're not going to attack."
