Algeria's Wildfires Ease as Solidarity Convoys Reach Jijel
(MENAFN) The intensity of forest fires raging across Algeria eased Saturday as firefighting crews continued operations in several provinces and convoys of aid headed toward affected regions, particularly the eastern province of Jijel.
The Civil Protection Authority said in a statement that 123 fires were recorded between Aug. 28 and 29 as of 7 a.m. local time (0600GMT). Of those, 118 had been extinguished, leaving five still active — two in Jijel, two in Setif, and one in Tebessa.
In Jijel, civil protection teams pressed on with efforts to douse a blaze in the Mechta El-Maissa area of Texenna municipality. Several families were evacuated from their homes as a precautionary measure before the fire was contained, allowing residents to return even as firefighting operations continued. The authority deployed two AT-802 aircraft to reinforce crews battling the flames in Jijel, and local media reported that 19,000 personnel had been mobilized nationwide to fight the fires across Algeria's eastern provinces.
Funerals for wildfire victims began Friday in Jijel, where a collective burial was held at Dar al-Baqaa cemetery in Beni Habibi municipality. Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and several government ministers attended the ceremony. Separately, authorities launched a search Friday for missing individuals in Djemaa Beni Habibi municipality, according to the provincial civil protection authority.
As firefighting and search operations continued, Algerians organized large-scale solidarity convoys to deliver assistance to fire-stricken areas, particularly Jijel, according to an Anadolu correspondent. The convoys, departing from multiple provinces, carried food, bedding, and other essential supplies for affected residents.
Meanwhile, authorities in Jijel began assessing material damage from the fires ahead of compensation efforts for those affected.
