Poland Nears Deal to Host US Patriot Missile Production
(MENAFN) Warsaw is engaged in advanced negotiations with the United States to shift part of Patriot air-defense system production to Poland, Polish Deputy Defense Minister Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka said Saturday.
Sobkowiak-Czarnecka said the discussions have progressed past mere political statements and are now unfolding directly with industry partners, with a decision possible within weeks.
"We have gone beyond the stage of political declarations," she was quoted as saying by Business Insider Polska.
She said the talks center on relocating part of the Patriot production chain to Poland as demand for the American-made air-defense system surges across Europe.
Poland first floated the idea of joint Patriot missile production with the US and Ukraine during talks in Washington in July, a proposal Sobkowiak-Czarnecka said at the time had already been raised with officials at the Pentagon and State Department. Earlier this month, she said Poland had moved well beyond exploratory discussions, predicting a US decision within "a month or two." She also acknowledged Poland is competing primarily against Germany for future Patriot-related manufacturing.
The negotiations unfold against a backdrop of mounting concern over Patriot interceptor shortages in Europe and rising pressure on NATO members to scale up domestic production as Ukraine continues to endure Russian missile and drone attacks.
Poland has emerged as one of NATO's top defense spenders since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, placing major orders for American weaponry including Patriot systems, Abrams tanks, HIMARS rocket launchers, and F-35 fighter jets. Increasingly, however, Warsaw has argued that large-scale arms purchases must come paired with technology transfer and domestic production as it works to rebuild its own defense industry.
