Cultural Icons Demand Palestinian Flag Fly at Venice Festival
(MENAFN) More than 200 prominent figures from film and culture have called on the Venice Film Festival to raise the Palestinian flag throughout this year's event, pointing to the inclusion of two Palestinian films in the official lineup.
The demand came in an open letter from the Venice4Palestine initiative, released ahead of the festival's opening next week. The group argued that the selection of Al Mowaten Osama (Citizen Osama) by Ahmed Hassouna and Hiwar ma' albahr (Conversation with the Sea) by Muayad Alayan warrants the same recognition the festival typically extends to films from other nations.
Organizers were urged to fly the Palestinian flag "alongside those representing all the other films in the official selection for the duration of the event."
Beyond the flag request, the letter called on workers across film, media, and culture to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and join a boycott of institutions tied to the Israeli government, citing what it described as the ongoing genocide in Gaza and Israel's broader attacks in the region.
"The exceptional nature of the historical moment we are living through compels us to isolate Israel diplomatically, culturally, and economically," the letter stated, adding that such isolation should persist until Israel complies with international law and ends its occupation and colonization of Palestine.
Among the more than 200 signatories were Italian directors Matteo Garrone and Marco Simon Puccioni, actors Guy Pearce, Indya Moore and Adele Haenel, musician Roger Waters, and Nobel Prize-winning author Annie Ernaux.
