Iran's Qalibaf Blasts Bessent's Oil Claims as 'Liar, Liar'
(MENAFN) Iran's Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf fired back Saturday at U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, dismissing his claims that American sanctions and a naval blockade are crippling Iran's economy.
"Liar, liar, pants on fire," Qalibaf wrote in a post on X, pushing back against Bessent's assertion that Washington had flooded global markets with 130 million barrels of oil over the past two weeks.
Qalibaf countered with what he called the "real 130s," pointing to figures he attributed to Moody's showing war-related costs exceeding $130 billion. He further alleged that U.S. trading firm Jane Street lost more than $130 million after betting against oil prices during a single futures rollover.
"Liar, liar, yields on fire," he added, amplifying a piece by economist Paul Krugman titled "Scott Bessent Fails to Gaslight the Market."
The exchange followed Bessent's earlier declaration that "the blockade and Operation Economic Outcast will crush the failing Iranian economy," a statement in which he credited U.S. efforts with steering 130 million barrels of oil onto the market over the previous fortnight.
The war of words underscores persistently high tensions between Tehran and Washington since fighting erupted in late February, when Iran came under attack and retaliated by striking U.S. military positions and assets across Arab states allied with Washington.
A memorandum of understanding, brokered in June in Islamabad with mediation from Pakistan and Qatar, was meant to halt hostilities and open the door to formal negotiations. But implementation has stalled, with Tehran accusing Washington of reneging on its commitments under the deal.
