Music Publishers Sue Anthropic Over "Blatant" IP Theft Claims

(MENAFN) Some of the world's largest music publishers have launched a major lawsuit against artificial intelligence company Anthropic, alleging what they describe as "one of the largest and most blatant ongoing thefts of intellectual property in history."

The suit, filed late Friday, signals the opening salvo in what could become a yearslong legal fight over how music is used in AI systems — and over the broader future of copyright protection in an era of fast-moving technology, according to media, which reported the filing Saturday.

Companies affiliated with Sony Music and Warner Music brought the case in federal court in Northern California, naming Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and co-founder Benjamin Mann as defendants alongside the company itself.

In a 48-page complaint, the plaintiffs allege that Anthropic and its founders systematically acquired copyrighted material without authorization in order to build and run the company's AI models.

"Defendants Anthropic and its founders Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann have conducted a brazen campaign of illegally torrenting, scraping, and downloading copyrighted works on a massive scale in order to develop, operate, and reap enormous profits from Anthropic's 'Claude' series of artificial intelligence ('AI') models," the plaintiffs said in the complaint.

The music publishers claim Anthropic unlawfully copied thousands of copyrighted musical works and are seeking hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages for each work allegedly infringed.

This is not the first legal challenge Anthropic has faced over claims that copyrighted material was used to train its AI systems. In September 2025, the company agreed to a $1.5 billion settlement with authors and publishers — at the time, the largest copyright settlement in US history.
