Israel Continues Southern Syria Strikes Despite Recent Diplomatic Talks
(MENAFN) The Israeli army shelled a location in southern Syria Saturday, despite a recent meeting between Syrian and Israeli delegations aimed at easing tensions between the two countries.
"The Israeli occupation army targeted Bat al-Warda Hill near Beit Jinn with four artillery shells," a Syrian broadcaster reported, though it gave no details on casualties or damage.
The strike came roughly a week after a Syrian delegation led by Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani met with an Israeli delegation in Jordan under US mediation.
Citing a diplomatic source, a news agency said the meeting was part of broader efforts to de-escalate tensions following an earlier Israeli attack on a Syrian airbase.
Last month, Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa said Damascus was pursuing a security agreement with Israel that could pave the way toward comprehensive peace — without giving up Syria's claim to the occupied Golan Heights.
Israel has occupied the majority of the Syrian Golan Heights since 1967.
Prior to the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime in late 2024, Israel routinely struck positions in Syria it described as linked to Iranian-backed forces. Since Assad's ouster, Israel has dramatically widened the scope of its strikes to include weapons depots and key military sites nationwide, recently bombing the Abu Duhur airbase in northwestern Idlib.
