US Pledges USD3.6M in Aid as Nepal Flood Death Toll Tops 675
(MENAFN) The United States unveiled more than $3.6 million in humanitarian assistance for Nepal Saturday, as the country reels from catastrophic glacial flooding, with the funding earmarked to deliver emergency food supplies to as many as 10,000 households in the disaster zone.
"There is no higher priority for us than the safety of American citizens. Our embassies in Nepal and China are working closely to assist Americans and support disaster relief efforts," the State Department said in a post on X.
The disaster was triggered Wednesday when a section of a Himalayan glacier gave way, unleashing devastating floodwaters along the Nepal-Tibet border.
The destruction has been severe: at least 675 people have died, and rescue crews are now racing to locate nearly 3,000 people still unaccounted for, among them foreign tourists — roughly 100 of them American citizens.
Nepal's disaster management agency reports that 589 of those missing are foreign nationals, while the Nepal Tourism Board says 261 foreign nationals have so far been pulled to safety.
