Israel Maintains Control Over Qalandiya Training Center Despite Withdrawal

(MENAFN) Israel’s withdrawal from the Qalandiya Training Center in occupied East Jerusalem does not restore the UN facility to UNRWA control, according to a Palestinian official who says signs of continued Israeli authority remain at the site.

Omar al-Rajoub, director of the Jerusalem Governorate’s media department, says Israeli forces leave the center on Friday after taking control of it earlier in the week, but several measures indicate that effective Israeli control over the facility continues.

Israeli forces reportedly seize the center on Tuesday and raise the Israeli flag inside its courtyard before leaving three days later, prompting widespread condemnation from Arab and international parties.

According to Rajoub, Israeli forces weld most of the center’s entrances shut, leaving only a small gate available for access. At the same time, workers linked to the Israeli-run Jerusalem municipality continue carrying out renovation, maintenance and preparation activities inside the facility.

He stresses that the military’s departure alone does not change the situation.

“does not mean the end of effective control over it or the return of the center to UNRWA’s administration.”

Rajoub also says Israeli authorities install surveillance cameras throughout the center and leave figures representing soldiers in several areas of the facility, while municipal workers continue operating inside the UN property.
