Greece Struggles to Secure World Cup Qualification

(MENAFN) Greece suffers another setback in the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifiers, falling 82-76 to Ukraine away from home on Friday.

The result adds to a difficult qualifying campaign for the Greek national team, which already drops games against Romania and Portugal during the opening round in July.

The latest loss leaves Vassilis Spanoulis’ team at the bottom of Group I in the second stage, with three victories and four defeats.

Greece now faces a challenging run of five remaining matches. The team is scheduled to meet group leaders Spain twice, Georgia twice and Ukraine once more as it attempts to improve its position and secure qualification.

Only the top three teams in the group advance to the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Qatar.

Greece has also been without NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo throughout the qualifying campaign as he continues to deal with an injury.
