Niger Brings Military Activity Under Control in Niamey
(MENAFN) Nigerian authorities say military activity in the capital, Niamey, is brought under control after heavy gunfire and explosions are reported near key government and security facilities.
Defense Minister Gen. Salifou Mody says security forces regain control of several strategic locations that come under attack, including areas surrounding Diori Hamani International Airport and the Presidential Palace.
According to Mody, a group of soldiers breaks away from the established military command and attempts to detain fellow personnel at the Base 101 military facility in Niamey. The group then opens fire on several important sites across the capital.
The defense minister says Nigerien security and defense forces respond quickly to the incident, preventing the military activity from escalating and gradually restoring control over the affected locations.
Mody calls on residents of Niamey to remain calm and continue with their normal daily activities as authorities work to maintain security across the capital.
