UNRWA Warns Millions in Assets Face Risk After Jerusalem Center Raid
(MENAFN) More than $5 million worth of UN assets are at risk at an UNRWA vocational training center in occupied East Jerusalem after Israeli forces forcibly entered the facility earlier this week, according to a senior agency official.
Roland Friedrich, director of UNRWA affairs in the West Bank, says Israeli security forces, municipal personnel and an elected official “forcibly and unlawfully” entered the Qalandiya Training Center on Aug. 25 and removed UNRWA employees from the premises.
Israeli authorities then remained inside the facility while carrying out renovation and clearance activities, Friedrich says in a statement posted on US social media company X.
According to the official, Israeli security forces appear to leave the center on Aug. 28, with damage to UN property and indications that some items may have been looted discovered afterward.
“At the time of the unlawful entry, the KTC was being prepared for the new academic year, expecting to receive 340 students from across the West Bank next week,” he added.
The training center contains numerous vocational workshops, classrooms, dormitories and administrative facilities. It also houses specialized tools and equipment required for hands-on professional training.
Friedrich says the UNRWA property located at the center is valued at more than $5 million. He notes that the agency, together with international partners, has invested substantially in the facility in recent years, including spending on vocational equipment, infrastructure upgrades, maintenance and repairs.
