Greece Raises Wildfire Alert as Strong Winds Increase Fire Risk
(MENAFN) Greek authorities place Crete, Rhodes and Karpathos under the country’s highest wildfire danger category as powerful winds and dry conditions increase the likelihood of fires.
The extreme alert follows forecasts for strong northerly winds, with gusts expected to reach 8 to 9 on the Beaufort scale. The combination of high winds and dry weather is also expected to make it more difficult for emergency crews to contain any fires that break out.
A very high fire risk, classified as Category 4, is also declared for Attica, southern Evia, southern Laconia, the Cyclades and the eastern Aegean islands.
Civil protection authorities instruct government agencies, municipalities and regional administrations in the areas facing the greatest danger to strengthen their preparedness and remain on heightened alert.
Residents and visitors are meanwhile urged to avoid any outdoor activities that could accidentally ignite fires, particularly while conditions remain dry and windy.
