Ebola Outbreak Expands in Congo as Cases, Deaths Rise—WHO
(MENAFN) The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to expand, with 5,794 confirmed cases and 2,786 deaths recorded in the country, according to the World Health Organization.
The outbreak now affects 60 health zones, up from 54 reported in the previous update issued on Aug. 14, highlighting the widening geographic reach of the disease.
The current figures put the crude case fatality ratio at 48.1%, meaning nearly half of the confirmed cases have resulted in death.
The UN health agency describes the increase in infections and the broader spread of the outbreak over the past three months as a “substantial increase” in its overall scale.
WHO maintains that the outbreak continues to constitute a public health emergency of international concern. The agency warns that delays in identifying infected individuals could increase the likelihood of transmission within households, communities and healthcare facilities.
Across all countries affected by the outbreak, 5,815 confirmed cases have been recorded, including 20 cases in Uganda and one in France. The overall death toll stands at 2,788, with two fatalities reported in Uganda, while at least 1,314 patients have recovered.
