ICE Arrests Milo Yiannopoulos After Missed Immigration Hearing
(MENAFN) US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detains British political commentator Milo Yiannopoulos in Louisiana after he fails to appear at an immigration hearing, according to authorities.
The 41-year-old is arrested Thursday at New Orleans International Airport after missing an immigration hearing the previous month. The Department of Homeland Security announces the arrest in a statement posted on US social media company X.
"Milo Yiannopoulos, an illegal alien from the United Kingdom ... legally entered the country on May 14, 2019, through New York City, New York. He chose to overstay his welcome in violation of our nation's laws," DHS said.
"Yiannopoulos was issued a final order of removal by an immigration Judge on July 22, after failing to show up for his immigration hearing. He will remain in ICE custody pending removal."
Yiannopoulos gains national attention as a prominent figure at the far-right news organization Breitbart before and during the 2016 US presidential election. His controversial speeches and provocative material, particularly on college campuses, generate widespread criticism. He leaves the organization in 2017 after previously made remarks that appeared to condone pedophilia resurface publicly.
Following his departure from Breitbart, Yiannopoulos becomes involved in disputes with several figures on the far right and increasingly clashes with mainstream Republican figures. He also turns against President Donald Trump in 2020 after previously supporting him.
Yiannopoulos later works alongside Kanye West on the rapper’s unsuccessful 2024 presidential campaign, helping with efforts surrounding the campaign.
