Czech Volunteer Who Gave His Life For Ukraine Honored In Olomouc

Jiří Kotrla, call sign“Maus,” served with the 3rd Assault Brigade and was killed on August 29, 2025. He was 27. His remains have not yet been recovered and are still in territory occupied by Russia.

His mother, Lucie Kotrlová, decided to hold a Christian farewell ceremony for her son. Jiří was her only child, and she raised him alone.

Ukraine's Ambassador to the Czech Republic Vasyl Zvarych paid tribute to the memory of the Czech volunteer who gave his life for Ukraine.

“Jiří went to Ukraine to fight against injustice. He made the pain of his friends his own. He understood that freedom has no borders: when it is threatened in one place, it is at risk everywhere. Ukraine considers Jiří a true hero. We consider him our brother. We are truly proud of him,” the diplomat said.

He also thanked the hero's mother on behalf of Ukraine for raising such a son.

As reported by Ukrinform, on August 1, Lucie Kotrlová and the mother of another Czech volunteer, 22-year-old Jonatan Gertli, call sign“Little John,” who was killed on December 27, 2025, in the Zaporizhzhia region and whose remains have also not yet been returned to his family, visited Kyiv. A commemorative event honoring Czech citizens who gave their lives fighting Russian aggressors alongside Ukraine was held on Independence Square.

The exact number of Czech citizens currently fighting in Ukraine against the Russian invasion is unknown. Available data indicate that at least six of them have been killed, though the actual number may be higher.
