Egypt Explores Expanding Solar Power, Green Finance In Local Development Plans
Government officials and representatives of civil society, the private sector, universities and research institutions discussed clean-energy investment, green financing and support for small and medium-sized enterprises during a roundtable on a just energy transition, the ministry said in a statement.
Local Development and Environment Minister Manal Awad said a just energy transition should go beyond expanding clean-energy sources to include greater energy efficiency, reduced consumption and stronger participation by local communities, while balancing environmental, economic and social considerations.
Awad said civil society organisations could help promote energy-saving practices, support green initiatives and build local capacity because of their ability to work directly with communities and identify their needs.
Saber Osman, assistant minister for sustainability and social responsibility, said rising temperatures associated with climate change were increasing electricity and energy demand, strengthening the need for more efficient and resilient energy systems and greater deployment of renewable technologies.
He said cooperation among government, businesses, civil society, universities and research institutions would be needed to develop affordable solutions that could be deployed and scaled up at the local level.
Participants also discussed energy efficiency, digital transformation, governance, legislation and green investment and financing, calling for a shift from identifying challenges to developing practical interventions that could be implemented and expanded.
The ministry said the discussions are expected to contribute to policy recommendations and a map of priority interventions in targeted governorates, as well as proposals for community-led initiatives and mechanisms to strengthen partnerships among government, civil society and the private sector.
