Jordan, Morocco Sign Extradition Agreement

Amman, Aug 29 (Petra) – Justice Minister Bassam Talhouni and his Moroccan counterpart Abdellatif Ouahbi signed an agreement for the extradition of fugitives as part of legal and judicial cooperation between the two countries to combat crime.

The agreement stipulates that the two sides cooperate in extraditing individuals wanted for prosecution for a crime or to serve a custodial sentence issued against them by the judicial authorities of the other party for committing a crime, in accordance with applicable national legislation and legal regulations in force in both countries.

Commenting on the agreement, inked in Rabat on Friday, Talhouni noted the deep-rooted historical ties between Jordan and Morocco, calling it a key milestone in legal and judicial cooperation between Jordan and Morocco as it offers a more effective legal framework for regulating extradition procedures and helps achieve justice, combat crime, and reduce impunity, Talhouni said in a statement.

The agreement, he added, reflects the distinguished level of relations between the two countries and underscores their commitment to expanding judicial cooperation and exchanging expertise and data.

He said global judicial cooperation has become essential in light of the rapid evolution of crime and the diversification of its methods, stressing the importance of clear legal frameworks regulating cooperation between countries and ensuring the effectiveness of procedures, while respecting the rule of law and established legal guarantees.

For his part, Ouahbi also underscored the importance of the agreement in enhancing judicial cooperation between Jordan and Morocco, calling it "a qualitative addition to bilateral agreements governing legal and judicial cooperation." //Petra//SS
