Russia Retaliates Against Romania with Diplomat Expulsion
(MENAFN) Russia expels a Romanian diplomat from its embassy in Moscow on Thursday in a reciprocal
measure following Romania’s decision last month to remove a Russian diplomatic employee
over alleged drone incursions.
The Russian Foreign Ministry informs Romania’s chargé d’affaires in Moscow of the decision
after summoning the diplomat. Moscow describes the expulsion as a response to what it calls
Bucharest’s “unjustified” move to declare a Russian Embassy employee persona non grata.
The dispute follows an incident in which Romania reports repeated violations of its airspace
between July 24 and 26. Romanian authorities say three drones that entered the country were
intercepted and destroyed.
Bucharest subsequently summons the Russian ambassador and presents what it identifies as
fragments of one of the drones.
According to Romanian officials, the fragments are “confirmed to be of Russian origin.”
Romania also issues a “firm protest against these illegal and irresponsible actions,” accusing
Moscow of violating its airspace and contributing to “the deterioration of the regional security
environment.”
