China Rejects Proposed US Tariff Increase on Chinese Imports
(MENAFN) China strongly criticizes a US proposal to introduce an additional 7.5% tariff on Chinese
imports, warning that Beijing could respond with countermeasures if the plan moves forward.
“The US has politicized economic and trade issues, which is a typical act of unilateralism and
protectionism. China firmly opposes this,” Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesperson Huang
Ling said.
Huang argues that China’s industrial capacity should be evaluated through a comprehensive and
impartial assessment rather than being used as grounds for introducing protectionist trade
measures.
“We will continue to closely monitor and comprehensively assess subsequent US measures and
reserve the right to take all necessary measures,” he added.
The comments follow reports that Washington is considering the additional tariff in response to
concerns over alleged excess manufacturing capacity in China. The final level of the proposed
duty has not yet been determined.
The latest dispute is linked to a Section 301 investigation launched by the US Trade
Representative’s Office in March. The inquiry examines manufacturing practices in China along
with those of 15 other economies.
