Chinese PM Visits Flood-Hit Tibet as Rescue Efforts Continue
(MENAFN) Chinese Premier Li Qiang travels to disaster-stricken Tibet on Thursday as rescue teams
continue searching for hundreds of people still unaccounted for following severe flash floods and
mudslides.
Li visits Gyirong Township, in the Xizang Autonomous Region, after the disaster strikes the area
near the Chinese-Nepalese border. He leads a group of senior officials tasked with overseeing
rescue operations, evaluating the damage and meeting residents affected by the disaster as well
as emergency workers.
Chinese authorities say more than 300 residents from several communities near Gyirong Port
have been moved to safer areas elsewhere in the county, with border inspection and rescue
personnel assisting in the evacuations.
Officials report that three people have died, while 558 others remain missing. The missing
include 260 foreign nationals, after the mudslide struck the major land crossing connecting China and Nepal.
Beijing has activated its highest-level emergency response as authorities continue efforts to
locate those missing, assist displaced residents and respond to the widespread impact of the
disaster.
