Iraq Foils Drone Manufacturing Plot in Baghdad
(MENAFN) Iraqi security authorities arrest three suspects and prevent an alleged attempt to produce
unmanned aerial vehicles in Baghdad, according to reports.
The suspects are taken into custody in connection with efforts to manufacture drones inside the
Iraqi capital, although authorities do not immediately disclose further information about their
identities or the intended purpose of the aircraft.
In a separate development, Iraqi military officials confirm that the international coalition’s
mission in the country is expected to conclude as planned on Sept. 30.
The US-led coalition was established in 2014 to combat ISIS, which had seized extensive areas
of Iraq and Syria at the time. Although Iraq announced the full recovery of its territory from the
group in 2017, ISIS has continued to carry out occasional attacks.
Iraq is also continuing efforts to strengthen state control over weapons. Speaking to reporters,
military spokesman Sabah al-Numan says the government is “keen to regulate the issue of
weapons in the country.”
