Poland Pushes EU to Penalize Meta Over Fraudulent Ads
(MENAFN) Poland calls on the European Commission to impose a €250 million ($291 million) penalty on
Meta over what officials describe as fraudulent advertisements and harmful online content aimed
at Polish users.
“This Wild West on the platform must end,” Krzysztof Gawkowski said.
The Polish digital affairs minister also demands that Meta quickly introduce stronger measures to
remove scams, misleading advertisements and promotions for illegal applications.
“I also call on Meta to immediately introduce effective tools to eliminate scams, false
advertising, and the promotion of illegal applications,” he added.
“Inaction and failure to effectively combat harmful advertisements and fraudulent content
targeting Polish users will not be tolerated.”
Gawkowski shares part of a letter sent to Henna Virkkunen, the European Commission’s
executive vice president responsible for tech sovereignty, security and democracy. The letter
raises concerns about the scale of fraudulent content appearing on major online platforms.
“The scale of this phenomenon points to a significant problem with the way advertising works on
one of the largest online platforms in the European single market,” the letter said.
Polish authorities argue that Meta has not taken sufficient measures to address the issue despite
repeated warnings from government agencies and cybersecurity specialists.
The demand comes amid renewed concerns over the misuse of artificial intelligence in online
scams. An AI-generated video reportedly circulated on Facebook showing a deepfake of Polish
President Karol Nawrocki promoting a fraudulent investment scheme.
