Germany Sees Record Heat-Related Deaths Amid Extreme Summer Temperatures

(MENAFN) Germany records an estimated 15,800 heat-related deaths this year, marking the highest figure
seen over the past decade, according to newly released estimates.

A large share of the fatalities is linked to periods of extreme heat. Around 9,600 deaths are
associated with the severe temperatures recorded toward the end of June, while another 4,000 are
connected to unusually high temperatures during the first half of August. The estimates cover the
period from April 6 through Aug. 16.

Previous years also saw significant numbers of heat-related fatalities, with approximately 9,500
deaths recorded in 2018 and 7,600 in 2019. Officials note that figures for previous years can
change because the estimates are regularly recalculated.

Authorities caution that the current figure is considered a conservative estimate and that the true
number of heat-related deaths could be considerably higher.

Medical experts also point out that heat is not always identified as the direct cause of death. In
many cases, death certificates instead list conditions such as organ failure, making it difficult to
determine the role extreme temperatures played.

According to health authorities, heat exposure can directly cause death in cases such as
heatstroke. More commonly, however, extreme temperatures place additional strain on people
with existing health conditions, contributing to fatal outcomes.
