Iraq Seeks Clarification from Iran Over Regional Maps
(MENAFN) Iraq’s Foreign Ministry summons Iran’s ambassador in Baghdad to request an explanation over
social media posts from Iranian diplomatic missions abroad that feature maps of the region,
according to reports.
The ministry says Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Legal Affairs Shorsh Khalid Said
calls in Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Kazem Al-e Sadeq over the posts, as well as related
statements and comments that Baghdad says “do not suit the depth of relations between the two countries.”
The diplomatic dispute follows a recent public disagreement between Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and Iraqi Parliament Speaker Haibat al-Halbousi over the name used for the body of water located between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula.
During a recent trip to Baghdad, Qalibaf shares a photograph of himself standing before a
regional map that uses Iran’s preferred name for the waterway. Halbousi responds a day later
with his own photograph in front of a map using the designation favored by Iraq and other Arab
countries.
Tensions rise further after Iran’s embassy in Kenya publishes a social media post displaying a
regional map and discussing the historical and linguistic backgrounds of the names “Iraq” and
“Baghdad.”
