Fire at Russian Gas Chemical Complex Claims More Lives
(MENAFN) The death toll from a major fire at the Amur Gas Chemical Complex in Russia’s Far East rises to
seven on Wednesday, according to the company operating the facility.
The blaze breaks out Tuesday at the construction site near the Russian-Chinese border but is later
brought under control. Specialists are now supervising the controlled burning of remaining
industrial gases at the site, according to a company statement.
Search and rescue teams recover the bodies of four Chinese workers, bringing the confirmed
number of fatalities to seven. The victims include one Russian national and six Chinese
nationals.
“The fate of nine more Chinese citizens … remains unknown. Search and rescue operations are
ongoing,” the statement said, adding that 152 people had sought medical attention.
Among those who receive medical treatment, 36 are hospitalized with injuries of different levels
of severity. A specially arranged flight operated by Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry also
arrives to transport some injured workers to medical facilities.
Authorities continue to check air quality around the outskirts of the nearby town of Svobodny.
The company says monitoring has not detected levels of controlled substances above established
safety limits.
