Tackling Terrorism Remains Foremost Priority: Kashmir IGP

(MENAFN- Kashmir Observer) Srinagar- Newly appointed Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone, Sujit Kumar, on Friday said tackling terrorism remains the foremost priority of the police while assuring people of their safety and seeking public cooperation in maintaining peace and law and order.

Kumar, who assumed charge as IGP Kashmir on Thursday evening, reviewed security arrangements at major congregation points in Srinagar and visited areas witnessing large gatherings following Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi (PBUH).

Speaking to reporters during his visit, Kumar said police were focused on ensuring peaceful and smooth congregational prayers while maintaining adequate security arrangements across the city.

“I congratulate everyone and want to assure the people that the Zonal Police is always there for you,” he said.

The IGP also sought cooperation from the public in maintaining peace and law and order, acknowledging that heightened security arrangements and traffic restrictions could cause inconvenience to commuters, particularly around major religious gatherings.

“Many people are offering prayers today, so we seek your cooperation. We understand movement is difficult for the public,” he said.

Kumar said police and other security agencies had put in place arrangements to facilitate large gatherings and ensure the safety of devotees at religious places.

During his visits, he reviewed security deployment, crowd-management measures and coordination among police and other security agencies at locations witnessing heavy footfall.

On counter-terror operations in Kashmir, Kumar said tackling terrorism remained the foremost priority of the police and that operations against terror networks would continue.

“Our operations were the first priority in the past and they remain the first priority today as well,” he said.

The IGP's visit came as thousands of devotees gathered at major shrines and mosques across Kashmir for Friday prayers and religious programmes following Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi (PBUH).

Police and security personnel were deployed at strategic locations, while traffic arrangements and diversions were implemented around major congregation points to regulate the movement of people and vehicles.

The arrangements were aimed at ensuring the peaceful conduct of religious gatherings while facilitating the movement of devotees across Srinagar.
