Dr Janelle K. Johnstone

For nearly three decades Dr Janelle Johnstone has worked across a range of sectors including the music industry, community broadcasting, and community welfare and development. Her practice background takes in roles as creative director, music curator, community development, communications strategist, and musician.
Janelle is currently an Associate Lecturer in Crime, Justice and Legal Studies. Her research explores gendered participation in Naarm's live music community, focusing on mid career and established artists working in DIY and punk traditions. Her focus on place making and identity extends to broader issues of justice and child and family welfare. She embraces participatory action and practice led approaches to produce collaborative public outcomes under the moniker Sonic aGender.
