Police Break Into Vancouver Gallery After Confusing Sculpture For Person
Officers were dispatched to the downtown location after a witness observed“a person's feet protruding from behind a counter... and believed medical assistance was required,” a spokesperson for the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) told Hyperallergic. Emergency responders proceeded to break the gallery lock and breach the front door, only to discover it was a false alarm.
The gallery is now facing a repair bill of 1,000 CAD (approximately $722 ). Online discussions have suggested that the witness might have believed artist Allysa Pierre's“Untitled (the preparator)” ( 2024 ) depicted an individual experiencing an overdose, a circumstance not uncommon in Vancouver given its ongoing opioid crisis.
