Ukraine, Romania To Resume Minority Rights Commission Meetings After Nearly Eight-Year Break

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Romanian President Nicușor Dan announced this while speaking to the media following a trilateral meeting with the Presidents of Ukraine and Moldova, Volodymyr Zelensky and Maia Sandu, in Chișinău, Ukrinform reports.

Dan recalled that Romania and Ukraine signed a Joint Declaration on Strategic Partnership earlier this year.

“I am very pleased that the process is moving forward. For example, tomorrow (August 28 – ed.), after many, many years, another meeting of our Joint Commission on the rights of the national minorities of both countries will take place, during which we will discuss important issues. The most important issue, of course, is education – education in the national languages of both countries,” Dan stressed.

As reported by Ukrinform, the commission's last full meeting (the seventh session) was held on December 10–11, 2018, in Bucharest.

In September 2020, the foreign ministers of the two countries agreed to continue and step up the work of this bilateral body. However, no further official full-format meetings of the Commission have been held since then. Instead, issues concerning the language and educational rights of national minorities have been discussed through direct intergovernmental consultations and cooperation between relevant ministries.
