CIA Chief Visits Moscow To Warn Russia Against Attacking NATO Allies And Aiding Iran Politico

According to one of the two sources and a British official familiar with the trip, Ratcliffe also used his rare unannounced visit to the Russian capital on Tuesday to pressure Russia to reduce its military and economic support for Iran.

Russia has publicly issued a series of threats in recent weeks against NATO countries supporting Ukraine, raising concerns that Moscow could resort to new aggressive acts of hybrid warfare or limited military action against NATO allies, including the United Kingdom.

One source said Ratcliffe's visit was primarily intended to warn Russia against any escalatory actions targeting the Baltic states.

Speaking in a radio interview on Wednesday morning, U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed suggestions that Ratcliffe had traveled to Moscow to persuade Putin not to test NATO's resolve or attack the United Kingdom, which this week pledged to double its support for Ukraine.

Trump described the visit as“semi-routine” but acknowledged that it was aimed at bringing an end to Russia's war against Ukraine.

“I hate to disappoint people. We would like to see the war with Ukraine end,” he said.

Under the North Atlantic Treaty, an armed attack against one member is considered an attack against all members.

As reported by Ukrinform, the CIA Director flew to Moscow on Tuesday on a secret mission aboard a military aircraft.

Experts believe Ratcliffe may have conveyed a demand to the Russian leadership to end its aggression against Ukraine and warned of the possibility of increased U.S. pressure should Russia refuse to engage in negotiations, including through the use of long-range capabilities.
