Claire Denis Directs 32Nd Miu Miu Women's Tales Film

(MENAFN- USA Art News) French filmmaker and screenwriter Claire Denis is set to direct the 32nd installment in the Miu Miu Women's Tales film series. Her new short film, titled“Avec Kim,” will premiere on September 5 during the upcoming Venice Film Festival. This debut will follow a screening of the preceding episode,“Discipline,” directed by Mona Fastvold, which was first shown in New York last February.

“Making films for me is to get rid of explanation. It is a journey into the impossible,” Denis said in a statement. Born in Paris in 1946, Denis spent a significant portion of her childhood in colonial French Africa, an experience that has profoundly influenced her work. She is known for her sensual style and exploration of themes such as desire, alienation, and race, often blending narrative with abstraction.

Denis achieved international recognition with her 1988 film“Chocolat,” a contemplative piece focusing on a French woman reflecting on her childhood in Cameroon and her relationship with her family's African servant. The film garnered critical acclaim and was nominated for the Palme d'Or at Cannes. Her notable filmography also includes the nearly dialogue-free drama“Beau Travail” from 1999 and“35 Shots of Rum” in 2008. More recently, her work expanded to include her first English-language feature,“High Life,” starring Robert Pattinson and Juliette Binoche in 2018, along with 2022 releases“Both Sides of the Blade” and“Stars at Noon.” The latter secured the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival that year. Her latest feature,“The Fence,” premiered last year.

By directing for Miu Miu, Denis joins a distinguished list of filmmakers who have contributed to the series, including Alice Diop, Joanna Hogg, Dakota Fanning, Chloë Sevigny, Agnès Varda, Alice Rohrwacher, Miranda July, and Zoe Cassavetes. The Miu Miu Women's Tales series, initiated in 2011, reflects the passion for cinema held by the brand's creative director, Miuccia Prada. In 2023, to further enhance the program, support emerging talent, nominate future directors, and ensure broader visibility across various platforms, the Italian brand established the new Miu Miu Women's Tales Committee. Its members include Prada; Verde Visconti, Prada Group talent relations special projects director; Ava DuVernay, the award-winning director, writer, and producer of“Selma,” who also directed the fifth Women's Tales episode; Australian costume, production, and set designer Catherine Martin; and American actress, writer, and filmmaker Maggie Gyllenhaal.
