Rajasthan Govt Suspends Pashupatinath Pilgrimage After Nepal Tragedy

(MENAFN- IANS) Jaipur, Aug 27 (IANS) The Rajasthan government on Thursday announced the temporary suspension of the pilgrimage to the Pashupatinath Temple in Nepal under the Chief Minister's Senior Citizen Pilgrimage Scheme, citing the recent natural disaster and prevailing challenging conditions.

Devasthan Minister Joraram Kumawat said that, following the directions of Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, air travel to Kathmandu has been suspended for five days, from August 27 to August 31, 2026.

Officials said the decision prioritised the safety and well-being of senior citizens. Kumawat emphasised that the health and security of elderly pilgrims remain the state government's foremost priority.

He noted that the recent tragedy in Nepal has affected local conditions and infrastructure, creating circumstances that could pose risks for senior citizens undertaking the pilgrimage.

The minister said the suspension was ordered as a precaution to ensure pilgrims do not face inconvenience or safety threats during the journey. The government is closely monitoring developments in Nepal before deciding whether to resume services.

Reassuring senior citizens and their families, Kumawat said pilgrims should not be disappointed by the temporary suspension. He added that the Devasthan Department is continuously monitoring weather conditions, infrastructure and security arrangements in Nepal. The pilgrimage will be rescheduled once conditions return to normal and are considered safe.

Necessary arrangements will be made to ensure that eligible senior citizens can undertake the pilgrimage with adequate safety measures. Kumawat reiterated that the suspension is precautionary and reflects the government's emphasis on ensuring the safety, comfort and well‐being of senior citizens participating in the scheme.
