Jordan's Interior Ministry Staff Conclude Humanitarian Law Workshop

Amman, Aug. 27 (Petra) -- The National Committee for International Humanitarian Law wrapped up a specialized workshop Thursday on the state of international humanitarian law in current armed conflicts and crisis management, held in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Talking at the closing ceremony, retired Lt. Gen. Mamoun Khasawneh, the committee's chairman, said humanitarian law is grounded in ethical principles that are binding on all parties under custom and law.

He noted that international law now faces direct challenges, mainly dominance of power politics among major states and a surge in cyberattacks driven by rapid technological advances.

Khasawneh praised King Abdullah II's political acumen in preserving Jordan's security and stability amid a region roiled by conflict, highlighting the Ministry of Interior's role as a "strategic partner" of the committee.

The workshop featured papers by international law experts covering the field's relationship to human rights, protection of civilians and property, environmental protection, and mechanisms for enforcing international legal rules.

The event was part of a series of workshops, seminars and activities under the committee's 2026 work plan. Participants affirmed the importance of strengthening cooperation between the Ministry of Interior and the committee to achieve shared goals.

As for its scope, the workshop targeted Interior Ministry employees working in the northern governorates, aimed to "institutionalize" their knowledge of international humanitarian law and deepen their grasp of its principles and humanitarian dimensions.
