Qatar's Top Diplomat Meets Iranian Counterpart in Tehran
(MENAFN) Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani held talks with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi in Tehran on Thursday, Iran's Foreign Ministry confirmed.
The ministry released photos from the meeting but offered no immediate details on what was discussed.
The trip by Sheikh Mohammed, who also serves as Qatar's prime minister, comes as Doha presses ahead with efforts to de-escalate tensions between Iran and the United States.
Ahead of the visit, Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari said Sheikh Mohammed would meet with Iranian officials to explore ways of easing tensions and fostering conditions for dialogue. He added that the discussions would also touch on freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and the need to restore the waterway to the status quo that existed before Feb. 28.
The visit represents the Qatari foreign minister's first trip to Iran since the conflict between Washington and Tehran erupted following US and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February.
The US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding in June, brokered with mediation from Pakistan and Qatar, though its implementation has since stalled over disagreements concerning the Strait of Hormuz. Washington resumed military strikes on Iran last month, prompting Tehran to retaliate by striking US military assets in Arab countries aligned with the United States.
