Algeria Wildfires Kill at Least 12 Across Multiple Provinces
(MENAFN) At least 12 people have died as wildfires tore through several provinces in Algeria, Interior Minister Said Sayoud announced Wednesday, according to local media reports, as authorities scrambled to contain the widening crisis and assess the full scale of the destruction left behind.
Nationwide, 159 separate fire outbreaks have been recorded, with the death toll concentrated in three hard-hit regions: five fatalities in Jijel, four in Bejaia, and three in Tizi Ouzou, according to figures cited by local media covering the unfolding disaster.
Sayoud traveled personally to Bejaia to survey the damage firsthand and inspect the emergency response efforts underway, local media reported, as officials worked to coordinate firefighting resources and support displaced residents across the affected areas.
While there, he visited a 60-bed hospital in Souk El Tenine to check on patients injured in the wildfires and review the quality of medical care being administered to those affected by the fast-moving blazes.
