UN Official Says Israeli Settlements Violate International Law
(MENAFN) A senior UN official says Israeli settlement activity in the occupied West Bank has no legal standing and represents a serious breach of international law.
Ramiz Alakbarov, the UN deputy special coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, reiterates before the Security Council that Israeli settlements lack legal validity.
“I reiterate that settlements have no legal value,” he said.
Alakbarov also raises concerns over Israel’s recent opening of tenders for more than 1,200 housing units in the E1 area of occupied East Jerusalem. He warns that carrying out the project would “effectively sever the northern and southern parts of the West Bank,” further undermining the possibility of establishing a viable Palestinian state.
He describes conditions across the occupied West Bank as “dire,” pointing to widespread attacks by Israeli settlers and what he says is an absence of meaningful accountability. According to the UN official, Israeli security forces often fail to protect Palestinians and have at times “facilitated or participated” in such incidents.
Turning to Gaza, Alakbarov describes the continuing humanitarian situation as “unacceptable” despite the ceasefire that has been in place for 10 months. He says Israeli airstrikes have intensified while Palestinians continue to face increasingly difficult living conditions.
With roughly two-thirds of Gaza still inaccessible, he calls for the removal of “key bottlenecks” restricting humanitarian operations, noting that the 2026 humanitarian appeal has received only 40% of the funding required.
