US Envoy Says Pilot Areas for Lebanese Army Deployment Take Shape
(MENAFN) Progress is being made toward identifying the so-called “pilot areas” in southern Lebanon where the Lebanese army is expected to deploy under a framework agreement aimed at securing Israel’s gradual withdrawal, US Ambassador to Lebanon Michael Issa said Wednesday.
Issa made the remarks following a meeting in Beirut with Lebanon’s Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Latif Derian, during which they discussed the country’s political future and ongoing negotiations between Lebanon and Israel.
Addressing continued Israeli military activity in southern Lebanon, Issa acknowledged that the attacks “have not stopped,” saying they are taking place mainly “outside the designated pilot areas.”
He said Washington has not yet reached an arrangement with Israel that would bring the attacks to an end.
Issa reiterated Washington’s backing for Israel’s position, attributing the continued military operations to what he described as Hezbollah’s “failure to honor the ceasefire.”
He further defended Israel’s continued actions, saying: “Hezbollah has never said it is prepared to hand over its weapons. So how can you ask Israel to withdraw from Lebanon?”
