Ghent University Defends Suspension of Researcher in Plagiarism Dispute
(MENAFN) Ghent University rejects allegations that it is undermining academic freedom by suspending American researcher Nathan Cofnas after he publicly accused the late Cambridge professor Jason Arday of plagiarism.
University Rector Petra De Sutter says academic freedom remains fully protected at the institution but denies that the disciplinary proceedings against Cofnas are intended to restrict his ability to conduct or express academic views.
“I support academic freedom 100 per cent,” De Sutter said.
“Claiming that we ourselves are restricting academic freedom is entirely incorrect,” she said, arguing that those criticizing the university have not seen the details contained in the disciplinary case file.
The university placed Cofnas on precautionary suspension on Aug. 20 while conducting an initial disciplinary investigation into the matter.
De Sutter explains that the institution has released only limited details because it must follow legal obligations, internal disciplinary procedures, and rules protecting the confidentiality of employee records.
“I know this is a weak point and that people do not understand it,” she said.
“I only see that the arguments raised in the public debate do not concern the substance of the matter,” she added.
